Although the
workshop introduced 21st Century Skills in an
enjoyable and interactive way, youth definitely
walked away with valuable information. |
This year’s Orientation for WorkReady
Employer-Paid Internships, sponsored by
United
Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania, was held at
Jefferson
University Hospital on June 24th and 30th. Over 480
interns came out in their best business attire for one of
the day-long sessions to learn how to make the most of not
only their internship experience, but of their futures.
Workshop topics included Financial Literacy,
presented by volunteers from the
Pennsylvania Institute of
Certified Public Accountants (PICPA) and an introduction
to 21st Century Skills. The PYN Youth Ambassadors, student
leaders who advocate on behalf of their peers, kicked off
the day with opening remarks and served as co-facilitators
in some of the workshops. Jefferson, which also hosts
WorkReady interns, donated the space for the event.

PICPA’s financial literacy workshop
educated participants on how to responsibly manage their
money by guiding youth through the process of creating a
summer budget. The workshop was overwhelmingly well-received
by youth, with one intern commenting, “This was the best
financial planning workshop I have attended!”
In the second workshop, youth
participated in fun activities designed to introduce them to
21st Century Skills and explain how to apply them in the
workplace and to their overall lives. Based on the Jeopardy
game-show format, the session imparted valuable information
for the soon-to-be interns. Of the workshop, one young
person said “The game[s] provided a lot of scenarios I may
be faced with at work”.
During lunch, the interns attended a
resource fair where they received information on employment,
careers, financial aid and higher educational information
from organizations including
Campus Philly,
City
Year Greater Philadelphia,
Greater Philadelphia Cares ,
National Student Partnerships,
TD Bank and
U.S. Department
of Labor. The interns also received a debit card holder
for their WorkReady debit cards, donated by PICPA.
PYN organized the WorkReady Employer-Paid
Internship Summer Intern Orientation, with the assistance of
48 volunteers from a range of companies and organizations
across the city.
